Cockroach Exterminator in Bakersfield

Which cockroach you have decides the fix. Small light-brown roaches in the kitchen are usually German cockroaches and need indoor baiting; big dark roaches coming in from outside usually need outdoor work and sealing.

Start by identifying the roach. The four you are most likely to see around Bakersfield behave very differently, and a technician who treats a German cockroach problem like an outdoor roach problem will waste your money. Here is how to tell them apart, what actually works, and when to call a licensed company.

Which cockroach do you have?

These descriptions come from the UC Statewide IPM Program.

RoachWhat it looks likeWhere it lives
GermanAbout 1/2 inch, light brown, two dark stripes behind the headIndoors: kitchens, bathrooms, food prep areas
TurkestanFemales about 1 inch, dark with cream markings; males smaller with yellowish-tan wingsOutdoors: water meter boxes, concrete cracks, compost, sewers
OrientalAbout 1 1/4 inches, almost blackOutdoors in cool, damp spots: meter boxes, drains, garages; may come in at night on ground floors
AmericanAbout 2 inches, reddish brownOutdoors: sewers, meter boxes, storm drains; sometimes forages into ground floors

UC IPM calls the German cockroach the most common indoor cockroach in California. It also notes that the Oriental cockroach is being displaced by the Turkestan cockroach, especially in Southern California, the Central Valley and other warm, dry parts of the state. In practice, if you see a roach near the garage or patio in Bakersfield, or by a water meter box, Turkestan is a strong candidate. A fifth species, the brownbanded cockroach, is also about 1/2 inch and lives indoors, often in furniture and behind wall hangings rather than the kitchen.

If you cannot tell which one you have, a clear photo usually settles it.

Why baits beat sprays

UC IPM says plainly that baits provide better control than sprays. Sprays give short-term control and often do not reach where roaches hide. Foggers and aerosol bombs are often ineffective and can scatter cockroaches into other rooms or other units without killing them. I would not fog for roaches.

Gel and granular baits work because roaches eat them where they live. A good technician puts small placements of bait in cracks near where roaches hide, not big blobs on open counters, and uses sticky traps to see where the activity is and whether it is dropping.

Baits fail when roaches have better food nearby. That is why sanitation is part of the treatment, not an extra.

Sanitation and sealing: the part that is on you

UC IPM is clear that pesticides alone do not solve a cockroach problem. These steps make baits work and keep outdoor roaches outside:

  • Store food, including pet food, in sealed containers.
  • Keep trash in bins with tight-fitting lids and take it out often.
  • Fix leaking faucets and pipes, and leaking irrigation. Roaches need water.
  • Vacuum cracks and crevices regularly.
  • Seal cracks, add door sweeps and cut clutter where roaches hide.

For the outdoor species, look at moisture outside the house. Our summers are long and dry, with about 6.2 inches of rain a year and almost none from June to September, so a leaky sprinkler, a damp meter box or a compost pile becomes a magnet. Clearing those spots matters more than spraying the whole yard.

Apartments vs houses

UC IPM notes that German cockroaches are especially common in multi-unit housing, and that infestation levels track with building disrepair and poor sanitation. In an apartment or duplex, treating one unit while the units next door still have roaches is a weak plan. If you rent, tell the property manager and ask whether neighboring units can be inspected at the same time.

In a detached house, the job is contained to your home. Outdoor roaches getting into a house are mostly a sealing and moisture problem. Much of East Bakersfield housing is older; in ZIP 93305, 79% of homes were built before 1980, per Census data on our Kern County pest data page. In an older home, sealing gaps around pipes and under doors is worth doing whatever the roach.

The fastest way to know which plan fits your home is an inspection.

Are cockroaches a health risk?

Yes, mainly as an allergy and asthma trigger. UC IPM identifies indoor infestations as an important source of allergens and a risk factor for asthma in children, especially in multi-unit housing, and says German cockroaches are believed capable of carrying several disease-causing organisms. If someone in the house has asthma, I would not let a German cockroach problem ride.

With kids and pets, baits placed in cracks and inside bait stations are a lot easier to keep out of reach than broadcast sprays. Ask the technician where each placement goes, and keep children and pets away from any treated area until the technician says it is fine.

What a cockroach exterminator costs

This Old House (updated March 2026) puts a single professional cockroach treatment at $100 to $600 nationally, with an average of about $200. Severe infestations cost more. These are published national figures, not our quote. Ask for a quote before any treatment, and ask how many follow-up visits are included.

A one-time visit can make sense for a few outdoor roaches wandering in. A German cockroach infestation inside usually needs follow-ups. See one-time vs quarterly pest control and our pest control cost guide for how plans compare.

Getting help

We only refer companies licensed by the California Structural Pest Control Board, and you can verify a license yourself. If you are also seeing ants or signs of rodents, mention it so one visit covers everything. For broader coverage, see general pest control in Bakersfield.

When you are ready, ask a licensed local company for a free inspection.

Questions homeowners ask

What kind of cockroach is common in Bakersfield?

Indoors, the German cockroach is the most common in California, per UC IPM. Outdoors, UC IPM says the Turkestan cockroach is displacing the Oriental cockroach in Southern California and the Central Valley.

Do cockroach bombs work?

UC IPM says foggers and aerosols are often ineffective and can scatter cockroaches to other areas without killing them. Baits give better control.

Why do I see big roaches at night by the garage?

Large roaches near garages and drains or by water meter boxes are usually outdoor species such as Turkestan, Oriental or American cockroaches. Sealing gaps, adding door sweeps and fixing moisture outside does more than spraying indoors.

How much does a cockroach exterminator cost?

This Old House (March 2026) lists $100 to $600 for a single professional treatment nationally, about $200 on average. Severe infestations cost more.

Are cockroaches dangerous for kids?

UC IPM identifies cockroach infestations as a risk factor for asthma in children and an important source of indoor allergens. German cockroaches are also believed capable of carrying disease-causing organisms.
